Freedom Was Never About the Leather Jacket

There are songs that belong to an era.

And then there are songs that somehow keep following you through every version of yourself.

For me, Freedom! ‘90 is one of those songs.

At first glance, it feels like peak 90s excess:

supermodels lip-syncing in smoky rooms,

leather jackets burning,

chrome and glamour,

old-fashioned clawfoot bathtubs,

a car exploding into pieces like some dramatic music video baptism.

It was beautiful.

Confusing.

Stylized.

Over-the-top.

And somehow… deeply human.

As a younger woman, I thought the song was about rebellion.

About fame.

About breaking free from expectations.

Now?

I think it’s about what happens when your outer life no longer matches your inner truth.

That changes everything.

Because freedom is not always loud.

Sometimes freedom looks like disappointing people.

Sometimes freedom looks like setting boundaries without explaining them seventeen different ways.

Sometimes freedom is finally admitting:

“I built a version of myself that kept everyone else comfortable… but left me exhausted.”

Whew.

That part.

And this is where Everything is Connected (No Really) and Living Aloha (Rooted and Regulated with Melin) braid together for me.

Because the older I get, the more I realize:

regulation is freedom.

Not performative perfection.

Not pretending.

Not hustling for worthiness.

Not shape-shifting to survive every room.

Real freedom is nervous-system-deep.

It’s being able to breathe in your own life again.

That’s why the imagery in the video matters.

The clawfoot bathtub?

That felt symbolic to me before I even understood symbolism.

A cleansing.

A shedding.

A return.

The burning jacket?

The persona.

The mask.

The costume we outgrow but keep wearing because people recognize us in it.

And the supermodels?

That was the genius of the whole thing.

The actual singer barely appears.

Instead, these impossibly beautiful people mouth the words:

“I think there’s something you should know…”

As if George Michael was quietly saying:

“You were all looking at the image anyway.”

Tell me that isn’t still relevant today.

Social media.

Corporate masks.

Healing language used as branding.

People curated within an inch of their humanity.

Everything is connected.

No really.

And maybe that’s why this song still hits decades later.

Living aloha, at least for me, has become less about appearing peaceful and more about becoming honest.

Honest about grief.

Honest about aging.

Honest about burnout.

Honest about longing.

Honest about needing rest.

Honest about who actually feels safe.

That honesty is freedom too.

Not the flashy kind.

The regulated kind.

The kind where your body no longer panics every time you choose yourself.

And maybe that’s what’s in this for the reader too.

Maybe your “Freedom! ’90” moment isn’t dramatic.

Maybe nobody’s watching.

Maybe there’s no soundtrack.

Maybe it’s just the quiet realization that you don’t want to abandon yourself anymore.

That counts.

There are songs you remember.

And then there are songs that remember you.

This one found me again.

I hadn’t heard Words by Missing Persons in years. Decades, maybe.

But the second it came on… my body knew before my mind did.

What are words for… when no one listens anymore…

I didn’t just hear it.

I felt it.

Because I know that place.

The place where you’re speaking… but not being received.
Explaining… but not being understood.
Trying… but nothing is landing.

And if I’m honest?

There was a time in my life when I thought the solution was more words.

More explaining.
More softening.
More proving.
More trying to be heard.

It took me a long time to learn this:

Some people don’t have the capacity to hear you.
Not because they’re bad people.

But because:

• they’re defended

• they’re disconnected

• they’re not ready

• or they simply don’t know how

And no amount of perfect wording will fix that.

That realization changed everything for me.

Powerfully.

Because when you really understand that…

You stop performing for understanding.

You stop chasing connection where there is none.

You stop abandoning yourself just to be heard.

Who can hold what you’re sharing.

There’s a line in my life now that didn’t exist before:

If my nervous system tightens instead of softens…

And I respond differently now.

It’s discernment.

It’s self-respect.

I didn’t expect it.

Of all the songs for Pearl Jam to carry, to hold with that kind of reverence… it was “Hawaiʻi ’78.”

A song rooted so deeply in our lāhui.

A song that is not just sung, but felt.

A song that asks a question many of us are still trying to answer.

Originally written and made timeless by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (Bruddah Iz), “Hawaiʻi ’78” is more than melody. It’s memory. It’s grief. It’s truth-telling. It’s love for ʻāina and people, spoken in a way that doesn’t look away.

“If just for a day our King and Queen would visit all these islands and saw everything…”

That line alone carries generations.

So when a global band like Pearl Jam steps into that space, it could have gone a lot of ways. It could have felt performative. It could have missed the depth. It could have flattened something sacred into something consumable.

But it didn’t.

They slowed down.

They listened.

And you can feel it in the way Eddie Vedder sings it. Not trying to be from here. Not trying to own it. Just holding it carefully, like something borrowed that matters.

That’s what surprised me.

Not that they sang it.

But how they sang it.

There’s a humility there. A restraint. A kind of quiet honoring that says, we know this is bigger than us.

And that matters.

Because “Hawaiʻi ’78” was never just about Hawaiʻi.

Yes, it speaks directly to the impact of colonization, to the loss of land, language, and sovereignty. Yes, it holds the ache of what has been taken and the question of what has been changed beyond recognition.

What happens when a place you love no longer recognizes itself?

What happens when progress costs you your roots?

What would our ancestors say if they could see us now?

Those questions don’t belong to Hawaiʻi alone. They belong to every place where culture has been pushed to the margins. Every community navigating identity in the face of systems that were never built for them. Every person trying to remember who they are in a world that profits from forgetting.

That’s why this song travels.

And that’s why it lands.

For me, hearing Pearl Jam sing it didn’t dilute the meaning. It expanded the reach.

It reminded me that when something is grounded in truth, it doesn’t lose its roots when it travels. It invites others to sit with it. To learn. To feel. To reflect.

And if we’re doing it right, we don’t just listen.

We ask ourselves the hard questions too.

What are we protecting?

What are we participating in?

What are we willing to change?

Because “Hawaiʻi ’78” isn’t just a song you admire.

And maybe that’s the quiet power of this unexpected moment.

A band from somewhere else carrying a song from here, in a way that says:

The Sound of Our ʻOhana

There’s something about hearing a familiar voice wrapped in melody that feels like coming home.

My cousin, Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu, gave the world the sound of Hawaiʻi through Lilo & Stitch. Not just a soundtrack… a feeling. A remembering. A cultural imprint that somehow carried our ʻike, our manaʻo, into living rooms across the globe.

There are songs that live outside of time.

And then there are songs that hold time.

This is one of those songs.

My dad loved this one.

Not casually. Not in the background.

He felt it.

When it came on, he would sing along in that falsetto Hawaiian style… full voice, full heart, no holding back.

The kind of singing that wasn’t performance. It was memory. It was devotion. It was love made audible.

I can still hear him.

After he passed, something shifted in our house.

That same song would come on the radio… and my mom would weep.

Not a quiet tear.

A deep, body-level grief that had nowhere else to go.

At the time, I didn’t have language for it.

I just knew… this song carried him back to her.

And in the same breath, reminded her he was gone.

Now here we are, years later.

And the song has found me again.

Only now, it holds both of them.

My mom is still here…

but not in the way we once knew her.

80 years old, advanced dementia has taken her memory.

And something else too… her softness, her recognition, her sense of me.

There are moments now that are sharp and disorienting.

Moments where love doesn’t land.

Moments where I have to step back… for my own mental health.

Moments that don’t match the story I carry of who she has always been.

And that’s a grief all its own.

The kind that doesn’t get a ceremony.

The kind that unfolds slowly, in real time.

Then my mom’s tears.

And then… my own.

All layered together.

There are songs you understand.

And then there are songs your body understands before your mind even catches up.

Pata Pata by Miriam Makeba is that kind of song.

The first few seconds hit and something in me loosens. My shoulders drop. My hips remember something ancient. My feet don’t ask permission.

I don’t know every word.

And it doesn’t matter.

Here’s what I’ve come to learn, though.

“Pata Pata” literally means “touch touch” in Xhosa, and it’s the name of a dance that came out of Johannesburg’s townships in the 1950s.

A dance where people move toward each other, pull away, then reach out again.

Touch.

Release.

Return.

Tell me that’s not life.

The song itself? Released globally in 1967, it became Makeba’s signature hit, crossing borders, languages, and charts.

But here’s the part that always gets me.

This wasn’t just a catchy song.

This was a woman in exile.

A Black South African artist whose own government banned her music, revoked her passport, and tried to silence her.

And still…

the world danced.

There’s something quietly radical about that.

A joyful song traveling the globe while carrying the weight of displacement, resistance, and survival underneath it.

People didn’t need to understand the language to feel it. Even critics at the time noted that the words didn’t matter, the feeling did.

That’s the part I can’t shake.

Because if I’m honest…

that’s exactly how it lands in my body.

Everything is connected, no really.

A dance born in township spaces.

A woman forced out of her homeland.

A song that refuses to stay contained.

A listener thousands of miles away, decades later, in her kitchen, suddenly moving like she remembers something she’s never been taught.

Touch. Release. Return.

Joy doesn’t always ask for translation.

Sometimes it just asks for your body.

And if I follow that a little further…

maybe connection doesn’t require full understanding either.

Maybe it’s enough to feel the rhythm of something that was never meant to be confined to one place, one language, one story.

Maybe the groove is the bridge.

All I know is this:

No hesitation. No overthinking.

April 4, 1968 is one of those moments.

The day Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis is not just something we remember.
It is something we still feel.

A rupture.
A grief that never fully resolved.
A reminder of what it costs to live a life rooted in love, justice, and truth.

And yet, even in that loss, something endured.

Something that could not be taken.

Years later, U2 gave voice to that enduring truth through Pride (In the Name of Love).

Not as a history lesson.

A way of carrying forward what still matters.

We are stepping into a legacy.

Because this is what I feel every time I hear it:

is love that has been lived all the way through.

There was a season of my life that did not feel survivable.

Not in the dramatic, cinematic way.

In the quiet, grinding way.

The kind where nothing is technically “wrong”

and yet everything feels off.

I was an empty nester.

Working four jobs.

In the middle of my doctorate.

Showing up every day inside an organization that felt like it was unraveling in real time.

Layoffs.

Uncertainty.

That low-grade hum of anxiety that never quite leaves your body.

I was moving fast.

Too fast.

Frenetic on the outside.

Empty on the inside.

And every morning, I would get in my car and drive to work.

That’s where “Carry On” by Fun. found me.

Or maybe… where I found it.

It would come on without warning.

That voice.

That ache in Nate Ruess’s delivery that felt like it had lived a life.

And then the chorus:

I didn’t sing along at first.

Because something in me knew

There is a moment on every road trip when the miles stop mattering.

You’re still moving. Still heading somewhere.

But time loosens its grip a little.

We felt it somewhere between New York City and Williamstown, windows cracked, my daughter at the wheel, all of us fully committed to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack like it was the only thing that existed.

Not background music.

Not filler.

The soundtrack.

And suddenly the drive wasn’t just a drive anymore.

It was a scene.

We had already made a stop in Amherst, walking familiar paths, remembering who my daughter was when she first arrived there, noticing who she is now. Then back in the car, back into motion, one more hour to go. One more stretch before we arrived to celebrate my son’s graduation.

But that last hour?

It didn’t feel like an hour.

Because music does that.

It bends time.

A three-minute song can feel like a whole chapter.

A playlist can carry you across state lines without you noticing the distance.

You look up and realize you’re already there.

Music makes memory sticky.

Years from now, I won’t remember every turn we took or what the traffic looked like.

But if one of those songs comes on?

I’ll be right back in that car.

My daughter driving.

All of us singing louder than necessary.

That specific kind of joy that only happens when no one is performing and everyone is fully in it.

And there’s something else happening too.

It’s sensory. It’s relational.

We made it to Williamstown.

We celebrated my son. We marked a milestone. We took photos and hugged and held that proud, full feeling that comes with watching your kids become who they are becoming.

But part of what I will always carry from that day?

How long had I been waiting for my own apology? How many years had I moved through the world being endlessly compassionate toward others, clients, family, community, while silently holding myself in contempt for every mistake, every misstep, every moment I fell short of who I thought I should be? The words didn’t come easily because I had never truly turned toward myself and said them.

I’m sorry. I forgive you. I love you.

Tracy Chapman’s voice, that low, unhurried, ancient-feeling voice, has a way of bypassing every defense you have carefully constructed. There is nowhere to hide inside that song. It is too honest, too spare, too nakedly human. And when I finally let it land on me, as a message for me, I wept in a way that felt less like falling apart and more like coming home.

This is the heart of Mindful Forgiveness work, and it is why I bring this song into my groups. We don’t start with forgiving others. We start here, with the self, because everything else flows from this well. When I play this song in a Mindful Forgiveness group, I ask people to close their eyes and receive it as if someone who loves them completely is singing it to them. And then, gently, I invite them to realize: that someone is themselves.

The room always shifts. You can feel it.

“Baby, can I hold you tonight? Maybe if I told you the right words, at the right time, you’d be mine.”

That line, reframed inward, becomes one of the most profound questions we can ask ourselves: What would it take for me to finally be mine? To belong to myself fully, not the curated, performing, achieving version, but the tender, tired, trying version. The one who needed holding all along.

In group, the cathartic releases are real. Tears that have been dammed up for years, sometimes decades, finally find their way out. Not because I said something brilliant as a facilitator, but because Tracy Chapman said it first, in three minutes and forty seconds, with nothing but her voice and a guitar and the kind of truth that cuts clean.

This is what I know after years of clinical work and years of my own healing journey: forgiveness of self is not a single moment. It’s a returning. Over and over, you turn back toward yourself with softness instead of judgment. You practice saying sorry to the parts of you that deserved better. You practice saying I love you to the parts of you that never heard it from the inside.

And sometimes, on a good day, you let a song hold you while you do it.

I just know they do.
